The Toronto Maple Leafs currently have a serious problem, as they are almost 9 million over the salary cap.

They must part with at least one player, and the rumoured target is William Nylander.

A trade proposal between the Maple Leafs and the Flames has surfaced, and it gives a very good idea of the price Kent Hughes would have to pay to bring the star forward to the Tricolore.

In Toronto: Noah Hanifin and Mikael Backlund (50% of his salary)

On the Canadien side, you'd have to give a little more, as the team doesn't have Mikael Backlund. The closest, though less interesting, is Christian Dvorak. So it could go like this:

In Montreal: William Nylander

In Toronto: Mike Matheson, Christian Dvorak and draft picks (including a protected 1st-round pick)

In our opinion, the Maple Leafs will have to find takers for prospects or draft picks, otherwise they'll have to make multiple trades to get back under the salary cap.

On the other hand, they're in "win now" mode, so they need to keep as much of their roster as possible. One thing's for sure: GM Brad Treliving has his work cut out for him.
