Today a new comment from a former Swedish National Team coach has put Pittsburgh Penguins Erik Karlsson under fire for his style of play. The world stage of hockey brings a major amount of prestige that playing in the NHL or any other professional league doesn't quite live up to. For many players in hockey representing your country at an Olympics or other major tournament is the highest individual honor imaginable. With that said for many years now NHL players have not had the opportunity to represent their country on the international stage. That is all expected to change in a few months when NHL players will be part of the 4 Nations Face-Off. With this tournament upcoming several nations revealed their first few players on the roster for each country. For team Sweden, the first six players announced were Erik Karlsson, William Nylander, Filip Forsberg, Victor Hedman, Mika Zibanejad, and Gustav Forsling.

At first glance, these selections seem pretty standard. Each of these players is near the top of players from Sweden and carries a ton of prestige. However, a former Team Sweden head coach and general manager named Johan Garpenlov seems to have an issue with the roster due to one specific player.
Johan Garpenlov torches Erik Karlsson for his style of play
In a new interview, former Team Sweden Head Coach Johan Garpenlov spoke about the upcoming tournament. When talking about the roster that has been selected so far for this tournament Johan Garpenlov sees one big mistake made with the players selected. According to the former head coach, Erik Karlsson does not deserve to be on the roster due to his lack of defensive ability and constant mistakes. I had not selected Erik Karlsson in this 4 Nations squad. His shortcomings in the defensive game are too great in such a short tournament. Every match is so important and then you can't afford to make these big mistakes like Erik Karlsson unfortunately does, Garpenlov said via Radiosporten This season has been anything but good for Erik Karlsson. His Pittsburgh Penguins find themselves near the bottom of the standings and he has not played well. In spite of this, he has been selected for Team Sweden likely mostly due to his incredible success in previous years. Erik Karlsson is a multi time Norris Trophy winner and found success on the team side as well both with the Ottawa Senators and San Jose Sharks. Regardless of Johan Garpenlov's feelings Erik Karlsson is slated to once again play for Team Sweden and show off his incredible skill on the world stage.
