This afternoon the Pittsburgh Penguins have made the shocking decision to place former top-five overall pick Jesse Puljujarvi on waivers.

According to multiple reports former Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas and the Penguins will now be going in a new direction with the depth of their lineup.

Puljujarvi to this point in the season had spent the entire year with the Pittsburgh Penguins playing 21 games mostly in the bottom six with the team.

Puljujarvi arrived in Pittsburgh last season after an up-and-down few years with the Edmonton Oilers and a short stint with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Puljujarvi was, of course, selected 4th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft and looked at as a big part of the Oilers' future alongside the likes of Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Unfortunately, injuries including major hip surgery have derailed much of Puljujarvi's career and limited the incredible power game he once played as a young prospect.

In Pittsburgh after being given a second chance by Kyle Dubas the Finnish forward was seemingly playing well ranking near the top in several metrics for the Penguins.

Sadly it seems he fell out of favor with head coach Mike Sullivan and will now have to work his way back to an NHL opportunity.

Instead at just 26 years old Puljujarvi is likely heading towards his second stint back in Europe to try and get his career jump-started again.

Over the next 24 hours, every team in the NHL will have the opportunity to claim Puljujarvi and bring him into their NHL squad.

If not Puljujarvi will likely either be sent to the AHL with the Wilke-Barre/Scranton Penguins or have his contract terminated and sign elsewhere overseaso.
