Rangers rookie Matt Rempe has earned a reputation as someone who is not afraid to fight anyone. However, he has already crossed the line with his physical play a couple of times in his short career, tonight being the worst example.

Rempe Given Five And A Game For Dirty Hit On Devils Defenseman

The play came during the second period as Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler was attempting to reach the red line to dump the puck in. While he was able to make the play successfully, he paid the price for it as Rempe came across the neutral zone and lifted his elbow up at the last minute, clipping the blueliner in the head.

Devils defenseman Kurtis MacDermid was outraged by the play as he immediately tried to respond by dropping the gloves with the rookie. This comes after he tried to go with him earlier in the game, but Rempe refused. The linesmen got in the way before they two could go at though. Interestingly. Rempe was shown the door before they even reviewed the play to see if it was indeed a major penalty.

Suspension Likely Coming For Rangers Rookie After Brutal Elbow Penalty

While the rookie has avoided suspensions so far in his career, there will be no getting out of this one. This kind of hit is particularly unnecessary and as such, the Department of Player Safety will likely hand him a lengthy suspension. However, the department is extremely inconsistent making their rulings unpredictable so we will just have to wait until tomorrow to hear from the league on this play.

One must admire Rempe's confidence though as he taunted the Devils as he left the ice, waving goodbye to everyone.
