Today Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Ethan Hay has received a major suspension for comments he made to an opposing player in a recent OHL game.

Controversy has broken out this afternoon as it was announced that Saginaw Spirit forward Ethan Hay has received a 5 game suspension from the OHL. The suspension comes on the back end of an incident that took place against the Owen Sound Attack.

In the statement made by the OHL about what led to such a drastic suspension, the league confirmed that Ethan Hay made an inappropriate remark toward an Owen Sound Attack player. After an investigation, it was determined that the remark was made with malicious intent by Ethan Hay ending in a severe punishment.

Following a thorough investigation, the league has determined that Hay violated the OHL Code of Conduct as a result of a remark made in reference to an opposing player. It is the position of the League that, though there are reasonable grounds to suggest that Hay's remark was not uttered with malicious intent, it was delivered in a context that demonstrated a lack of awareness.

As of now, it is unknown exactly what Ethan Hay said to the Owen Sound Attack player. However, if it was severe enough for the OHL to suspend a player of Ethan Hay's caliber for 5 games it clearly must have been a severe and intentional move by the young player.

Before his suspension, Ethan Hay had 8 points in 13 games with the Saginaw Spirit. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2023 in the 7th round. He is also the captain of the Saginaw Spirit this season and is expected to be a leader and set a good example. Clearly somewhere along the line that did not happen ending in a major suspension.

Now Ethan Hay will be out of the Saginaw Spirit lineup and serve the suspension without an appeal. Hopefully, he learns that his words and actions have consequences going forward and will not end up in this kind of trouble again.
