Trade rumors are really heating up lately, and now the Winnipeg Jets have been linked to Brock Nelson of the New York Islanders in the latest blockbuster. Brock Nelson is by consensus regarded as the top free-agent center on this season's trade market. Unless the New York Islanders can sign him up on extension terms by Mar. 7 of this season's trade deadline, there is a good bet that he will be wearing a different jersey to finish off the season, such as the Winnipeg Jets.

Hockey insider Frank Seravalli dropped by on trade center recently, speculating what might form part of what is likely to be his possible move to Winnipeg. The Islanders would supposedly receive Winnipeg's 2025 first-rounder, along with the 2026 third-rounder, and prospect Rasmus Kupari. The 33-year-old winger is on tap this season on a cap hit of $6 million and has a 16-team no-trade clause. Up to date, he has scored 17 goals and 35 points in 55 games, making him one of the most sought-after targets on or around the deadline.
The Maple Leafs are also interested in Nelson
The Jets are by no means on that interest alone, of course, with others like the Toronto Maple Leafs, led by GM Brad Treliving, also eyeing him. Nelson recently spoke with Luke Fox of Sportsnet and opened up about his future on Long Island. «I know there's a lot of speculation from outside and different things, and people have already decided for me a couple of times what's going to happen,» said Nelson. «I want what's best for me, family, team and everything. So, there's a lot of factors that go into it.»

The Minnesota Wild are also on watch here. General Manager Bill Guerin is well aware of the playing style of Nelson through playing experience together on behalf of USA Hockey. With well over $14 million of buyout penalties coming off next season, there is financial wiggle room that might make room on that roster spot for Nelson. It is unknown how that added cap room will be utilized, but Minnesota might well turn out to be a competitor to the Jets in acquiring Nelson.
