During a charity teddy toss hockey game in the OHL for children, a brawl erupted between the two teams as teddy bears came raining down on the ice. The Ontario Hockey League has given something almost of a once-in-a-lifetime hockey moment that quite likely was never created before and may never again. A fight immediately followed the first goal of Sunday night's game between the Barrie Colts and the Ottawa 67's. Fighting in hockey, of course, is nothing new, but this was a Teddy Bear Toss game, anything but typical. For those who may not know, the Teddy Bear Toss is one of those beautiful winter holiday spectacles in hockey where everyone waits, just eagerly, for that first goal, so as to start an avalanche of stuffed animals onto the ice for collection and subsequent donation to children in need. Those are those heartwarming events that combine the best of the game action with a good cause in tow. But all that yuletide cheer apparently didn't rub off on the players that night, as players from both teams responded in a melee to teddy bears raining down onto the ice, almost surreal for how comically unintended it was. You can watch the line brawl here Desperate to restore order, the referees struggled to do so, but with this unnatural brew of flying, cuddly animals, and on-ice chaos, it was almost impossible to try and break up the fights. Skaters exchanging blows amongst a sea of teddy bears; what a memory that will be indeed for the books of hockey. Let's just hope that despite this brawl, those children in need will get those teddy bears delivered to them safely for the holiday season.
