The cash prizes that athletes receive when they win a medal at the Olympics has been revealed, and Canadian athletes are severely underpaid.

An article in the French newspaper "Journal de Montreal" has just revealed exactly how much every athlete gets from different countries for winning a medal, and there are some incredible differences between countries. Unfortunately for Canadian athletes, they are being heavily underpaid.

"Olympic medals don't hold the same value for all athletes. Since no cash prize is associated with the medals, it's the countries that decide to rewardor nottheir athletes. They also determine the size of the prize."

- Sarah-Florence Benjamin

Each country decides how much to pay their athletes for having competed and winning a medal at the Olympics. Below you will see just how little Canadian athletes are receiving at the 2024 Paris games.

These countries offer no cash prize to their medalists.

KAZAKHSTAN

Gold medal: $13,110 and a three-room apartment
Silver medal: $8,740 and a two-room apartment
Bronze medal: $4,370 and a one-room apartment

Athletes in Malaysia and Morocco earn $300,000 CAD for a gold medal, and Italians get $270,000 CAD for that same achievement.

Wow just $37,500 (all figures USD) as a monetary award to win a gold medal for the U.S. in the Olympics compared to Singapore where you earn $737,000 to win a gold medal or Taiwan at $716,000.

U.S needs to figure out a way to increase the monetary award for a gold medal.

Many athletes are receiving over $100,000 CAD for winning medals from their countries, yet Canadian athletes are one of the lowest paid in the world, and can only max out at $20,000 CAD. The Canadian government needs to step up and devote more funds to these hard working athletes. Enough is enough.
