Toronto Maple Leafs President of Hockey Ops Brendan Shanahan has one year left on his contract, and is ready to shake everything up in order to save his job. During Shanahan's end of season press conference, he announced that the Leafs would be willing to explore everything. Many fans believed what he meant by that was that the Core 4 would be broken up and huge trades would be coming. That never occurred. So far, the Leafs switched up some of their defence and have some new coaching staff, but the key players still remain. The Leafs sign Chris Tanev to a six-year contract

Keith Pelley took over a few months ago as the new President of MLSE, and publicly stated that he does not accept losing, and that the team must win at all costs. This was indirectly putting Shanahan's job at risk, so now he has no choice but to do whatever it takes to save his job. Shanahan may now have to use the power in his position to force GM Brad Treliving to make some moves, such as trading Fraser Minten or Easton Cowan, in order to bring in a big haul of players for those top prospects, as the Leafs need to win now, not later. We may finally start seeing the Leafs get more aggressive than they normally are throughout the year in terms of trading players, especially at the trade deadline next season.
