He played 18 seasons in the minor leagues from 1956 to 1974 before becoming a coach.
Tom McVie was a head coach in the NHL for nine seasons
Tom McVie was a head coach in the NHL for nine seasons with the Capitals, Jets, and Devils from 1975 to 1992. The entire Boston Bruins organization is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Tom McVie. Tom was a huge part of our Bruins family, having served as a coach, scout and ambassador for more than 30 years. His hockey mind, colorful personality, gruff voice, and unmatched sense of humor livened up every room he entered and will be dearly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tom's family and many loved ones. - Cam Neely

McVie's first year coaching in the NHL came with Washington in their second season. He took over one of the worst rosters in the league. Coming off of an 8-67-5 expansion season, the team could only manage 11 wins in year two. Though they never made the playoffs during his time, McVie did direct the Capitals to a decent 24-win campaign in 1976-77, which did provide a bit of respectability to that lousy franchise. After leaving Washington in 1978, McVie moved on to the World Hockey Association's Winnipeg Jets, leading them to an 11-8-0 mark before advancing with the team for the final Avco Cup championship. His roster featured eventual NHL stars Morris Lukowich and Kent Nilsson. After the merger, McVie remained with the Jets but was fired early in the 1980-81 season. He then joined the Devils organization, coaching in the AHL, and serving as interim NHL head coach in 1983-84, 1990-91, and 1991-92. McVie then joined the Bruins as an assistant coach in 1992, then moved to a pro scout in 1998, and remained in that role until retiring after the 2019-20 season, going out on top. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to all of Tom's family and friends during this very difficult time.
