This is not the news that Leafs fans want to hear, but it seems that goaltender Joseph Woll has suffered an injury and will not make his debut tonight for the team.

Goaltending has been a concern for the Toronto Maple Leafs heading into the season and it seems like those could be warranted. Much of that speculation had to do with the health of Joseph Woll and the inexperience of backup Anthony Stolarz. Per Elliotte Friedman, the Leafs are taking some action as they call up Dennis Hildeby to Montreal for the opener against the Canadiens. Luke Fox then added fuel to the fire by confirming that Joseph Woll is indeed suffering from an injury.

The injury history of Joseph Woll is nothing new. He got hurt at the worst time in Game 6 of the playoff series last year against the Boston Bruins, which slid Ilya Samsonov into the crease on the path to Game 7. That was a high-pressure scenario, and maybe that played out in the Leafs' outcome. While Samsonov was very decent mostly, it's pretty reasonable to believe the team would have been better off, with more conviction, if Woll had been fit to play.

But through pre-season, Dennis Hildeby has looked perhaps like a solution to the Leafs' problem in goal. The young goalie was strong in his two appearances, including a .963 save percentage in a 2-1 win against Montreal. His good performance could provide some reassurance with the team uncertain about the goaltending.

It's nonetheless very possible that the Leafs have called up Hildeby for reasons other than this injury to Woll being too serious. While Woll is unable to start, there's no indication that it is a serious or long-term injury. Fans are hoping this is just a one-game setback.

In all, the question marks surrounding the Maple Leafs' goaltending situation persist, and the decision to bring in Dennis Hildeby for the opener would indicate the team is preparing for any eventuality, especially now that Joseph Woll can not start tonight. Fans are waiting with bated breath for further updates that will reveal just exactly how serious this injury is to Woll.
