The Colorado Avalanche have made a surprising move today and decided to waive 400-game NHL veteran Chris Wagner, as the team looks to shake things up. The Colorado Avalanche are slowly getting healthier with key forwards Artturi Lehkonen and Valeri Nichushkin back in the lineup, but the team made an eyebrow-raising move on Tuesday as veteran fourth-liner Chris Wagner was placed on waivers, according to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman.

The move will come as a surprise given that the 33-year-old Chris Wagner re-upped on a one-year deal this offseason following a campaign in which he gave quality minutes on the fourth line last year. While he has just one goal in 22 games this season, his veteran presence and steady play have been a boost to the Avalanche's bottom-six forwards. The move is a roster maneuver in anticipation of the holiday roster freeze, but given that teams are always scouring the wire for dependability at the back of their rosters, there's a decent chance Wagner could be claimed. Wagner has played five games with the AHL's Colorado Eagles this season, and clearing waivers would certainly make that a possible destination once more. But given the depth issues of the Avalanche, they're certainly hoping he does clear and can remain within the organization without being claimed off of waivers. A fifth-round selection back in 2010, Wagner has totaled 395 career NHL games. The waiver placement would certainly blur any footing on that front, but Wagner's experience and leadership could be a hot commodity.
