NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has reported that the Canucks had a trade ready for JT Miller, but it apparently fell apart a little before puck drop last night.

The Vancouver Canucks are dealing with inconsistency from their star forwards, JT Miller and Elias Pettersson, on the ice, with rumors swirling of a rift off it.

Elliotte Friedman reveals a JT Miller trade fell apart

It reached a fever pitch when, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman, Miller was close to being scratched Saturday as part of a would-be trade with the New York Rangers.

"J.T. Miller I expect is going to play tonight, unless something changes at the last minute. But there was a time in the last 24 hours where J.T. Miller was not going to play.

He was going to be held out of the lineup because talks were progressing on a trade, I believe that team to be the New York Rangers."

"Now I don't know exactly what happened but that trade is off right now. ... Things had progressed to a certain point where he was definitely not going to play."

Instead, nothing materialized, and he suited up for the Vancouver Canucks' 3-2 win in a very feisty game against the Edmonton Oilers, notching two primary points, his first since a four-point effort on January 6.

Miller's recent production has become a talking point for the Canucks. He was benched by head coach Rick Tocchet after a tough loss earlier this month, in which he suggested he lost focus.

Miller still leads all Canucks forwards with seven points in nine games since January, but he's scored in just three of those, and his 40% goals-for percentage (GF%) is the third-lowest in Vancouver's top six, behind only Pettersson's 25% and Jake DeBrusk's 33.3%.

The drama hasn't kept Miller from continuing to produce. With 31 points in 35 games this season, he is on pace for 73 over 82, his lowest since notching 72 in 2019-20, his first season with Vancouver.

Other than that, Miller has produced at an elite level, collecting 99, 82, and 103 points from 2021 to 2024. Over the course of 399 games with the Canucks, his 433 points lead Quinn Hughes' 380 and Pettersson's 375 across that span.

Fans will continue to monitor this situation as it progresses, as it seems a trade could potentially materialize at any given moment.
