Connor McDavid has been involved in quite a bit of controversy lately, on both ends and unfortunately last night he was at the center of a vicious play. Connor McDavid dodged any on-ice NHL discipline recently when an elbow to the head of Minnesota's Marcus Johansson sent him to the injured reserve list. This time, however, McDavid may not get away quite so easily. In a feisty affair between the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks, McDavid and Canucks forward Conor Garland got into an altercation that ended with both headed to the penalty box.
Connor McDavid facing likely suspension
But McDavid might have much bigger problems than that, considering he nailed Garland with a blatant cross-check to the face. According to top NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, that means an automatic hearing with the league.

Tyler Myers will also have a hearing for the major penalty that he took for his play against Oilers' Evan Bouchard.

Of course, the play was careless, and there was absolutely no reason to hit Garland in the face. The NHL has started to crack down on those kinds of dangerous plays despite the fact that its Department of Player Safety is still taking plenty of criticism for being inconsistent. With McDavid having two questionable plays in under a week, there's some pressure to do something here. Not responding to such an obvious infraction would hurt any semblance of league credibility. This was an uncalled-for dangerous move by McDavid that put his opponent in a position to seriously injure himself. He got away with it the first time, but it's unlikely the NHL will be so lenient this time around, especially since the attention will definitely be turned to them.
