The Columbus Blue Jackets tallied their first win since the tragic passing of Johnny Gaudreau and unveiled a new tribute to pay homage to Johnny. Last night the Columbus Blue Jackets went up against the Colorado Avalanche. The game was the 2nd opportunity for the Blue Jackets to get in the win column. The game was an offensive explosion with stars coming up big for both teams. The Blue Jackets would end up pulling out a 6-4 win over the Avalanche. Sean Monahan one of Johnny Gaudreau's best friends in the entire world was clutch for the Blue Jackets. Sean Monahan tallied 3 points and looked incredible.

On his birthday Sean Monahan had a huge night and got his career with the Columbus Blue Jackets off to a great start. After the game things were not focused on him however but instead on his best friend Johnny Gaudreau who the Blue Jackets continue to honor in another special way.
Blue Jackets player of the game named in honor of Johnny Gaudreau
In a behind-the-scenes moment after last night's game the Columbus Blue Jackets revealed their new player of the game tradition. Each team has a locker room tradition where the play of the game is given often some sort of hat. This season the headwear is donkey ears. This was chosen as Johnny Gaudreau was always known for calling his teammates donkeys. The first donkey of the year went to Sean Monahan after his great performance. After being handed the hat Sean Monahan gave an emotional speech and credited his teammates for making Columbus feel like home already. Big win boys, said Monahan. Thanks for making it feel like home right away here. Great staff, great teammates. It's obviously emotional for me coming here and it's been great so thanks guys. Huge win.

This tribute is the most recent of several made by the Columbus Blue Jackets to begin the season. Earlier this week Johnny's widow Meredith reacted to the many moments of tribute for her husband. Monahan signed in Columbus this summer as a free agent. At the time he was hoping to play with his best friend Johnny Gaudreau. Now, after Johnny's tragic passing after an accident, Sean Monahan plays in honor of his friend instead. He is joined by James Van Riemsdyk who signed this summer as well. Van Riemsdyk was also close with Gaudreau and signed to honor his friend as well. As the season continues the NHL and the Columbus Blue Jackets will continue to honor Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau as well as their family. We continue to wish the Columbus Blue Jackets organization, the Gaudreau family, and all of those impacted by the loss of the Gaudreau brothers all the best in the journey through processing such a loss.
