Hockey fans got their first taste of a 10-minute overtime format during last night's Canada-Sweden game, and Connor McDavid and Nathan MacKinnon spoke on it. Mitch Marner became an instant history maker in dramatic fashion, scoring Canada's overtime victory over Sweden during the first game of the 4 Nations Face-Off.

But were it not under special rules introduced for the weekend, his score would not have counted. For this contest, the NHL had added a 10-minute three-on-three overtime to give star players more time to settle the game before having to go to a shootout. Marner took advantage, scoring the game-winner just over six minutes into the overtime.
McDavid supports the 10-minute format
After Canada's 4-3 win, Edmonton Oilers and Team Canada player Connor McDavid said he hopes the NHL brings the longer overtime format to the regular season. Based on how exciting this contest was, a lot of hockey fans probably would agree. I think it's a great kind of trial run, McDavid said of the 10-minute overtime. Something I think the players liked, the fans liked it. It felt a little more like it's in our hands. I don't think really anyone wants it to go to a shootout, so good thing we were able to find one there.
MacKinnon doesn't like the 10-minute format
Not everyone, however, is a fan. Colorado Avalanche's Nathan MacKinnon, Canada's first goal scorer, was not happy with the format. He said 10 minutes of three-on-three hockey is too long, and anything over seven minutes would be too long for regular-season NHL games.

Hockey fans and players will need a wait-and-see approach to see if this new format gets adopted into the regular season next year.
