The Edmonton Oilers made a major announcement today as the organization shook up their front office, particularly in the scouting department.

The biggest change came in the form of a new position. Warren Rychel, a long-time scout in the NHL, has been promoted to director of pro scouting, a position that the Oilers previously did not have at all. This comes as the organization is expanding their pro-scouting department with the addition of former Oilers forward Zach Kassian. Additionally, the team has hired Aaron Nagy as an amateur scout. This is his first front-office role with an NHL team. Finally, the team also announced a few other additions to the hockey operations department.

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Oilers have announced additional hockey operations staff:

Warren Rychel - Director, Pro Scouting
Zack Kassian - Pro Scout
Aaron Nagy - Amateur Scout
Erik Elenz - Video & Analytics Coaching Coordinator
Dominik Zrim - Director, Hockey Strategy
David Evanochko - Lead Solutions Architect

For the most part, Oilers fans appear to be happy with these changes. Zach Kassian in particular appears to be a very welcome addition. After all, he did spend the majority of his playing career with the Oilers. That being said, several fans have asked about the team's goaltending, particularly in regards to the coaching staff. Currently, Dustin Schwartz is in that position, a job he has held since 2014. Given how the team's goaltending has gone the past few seasons, it stands to reason why fans are questioning his capabilities.

Last season, Stuart Skinner was inconsistent for much of the season while Jack Campbell completely fell off a cliff. Another poor year between the pipes could sink the Oilers as the rest of the roster appears to be good enough to win the Stanley Cup. That being said, they did come within a single game of winning last year, so perhaps the organization does not see the need for change there. We will just have to see what happens this season.
