Today a new report from Edmonton Oilers insider Bob Stauffer has officially connected the team to signing a two-time Stanley Cup champion. With Evander Kane likely to miss the entire regular season according to recent reports the Edmonton Oilers are in desperate need of forward depth. Over the last few weeks, the Oilers have been linked to a few options on the trade market to add middle-six forwards. Of course, in a trade, the Oilers would need to create salary cap space and give up assets to acquire almost any player out there. Today a scenario has presented itself with former St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks forward Brandon Saad agreeing to contract termination with the Blues. This means Saad is foregoing the rest of his contract with the Blues and will become a free agent in pursuit of a new deal with a contending team.

While there is likely to be a strong market for Saad on the free agent market one of the teams that has been connected to him so far has been the Edmonton Oilers.
Oilers Reporter Links The Team To Signing Brandon Saad
In a new podcast clip involving Edmonton Oilers reporter and insider Bob Stauffer, he mentions the fact that for years not many players wanted to come to the Oilers. He then corrects himself and says not everyone wanted to come here but now a lot of them do including apparently Brandon Saad. Not everybody's wanted to come here. Well, now a lot of them want to come here, clearly the guy that was waived today. - Bob Stauffer

This is a clear reference to Saad who was on waivers prior to the talks of his contract being terminated which meant the Oilers could have claimed him. However, now with Saad terminating his contract and becoming a free agent, he is able to sign a new deal wherever he chooses. This means if he truly wants to play for the Oilers he could take a team-friendly deal that they can fit under the salary cap and likely immediately step into a top-9 role. Of course this now all hinges on the Oilers and whether or not they believe Saad is a valuable piece to add to the lineup. At 32 years old Saad has put up 16 points in 43 games and brings valuable veteran leadership and playoff prestige. If the Oilers wanted they could always sign him and then do the same that the Blues did placing him on waivers if the experiment goes wrong. The situation feels like a no-brainer for the Oilers particularly if Saad wants to come to Edmonton and is willing to do so on a discount. As this situation develops and Saad chooses his next team we will continue to bring all the latest news.
