The Edmonton Oilers want a team that can consistently compete for the Stanley Cup year after year, and need players to take less money in order for that to happen. A recent article by Sportsnet's Mark Spector has revealed that the Oilers are asking their stars Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid to take a few million off their salary in order for GM Stan Bowman to use that towards other players so that the overall roster can remain competitive. The team is refusing to overpay for unproven NHL players.

The Edmonton Oilers had initially offered Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway deals in the $1 million range, which is a salary the team felt was perfect for two unproven players to receive so that they can help the team towards a Stanley Cup. The St. Louis Blues more than doubled that amount in their two offer sheets, making it absolutely impossible for the Oilers to match, as the team felt it couldn't justify such high salaries. Broberg only played in 81 NHL games in his career and will be making almost $5 million a season, which is absurd to think of.

It's no doubt very tough for the Oilers organization and their fans to see not one, but two of their former first-round draft picks go to a rival Western Conference team, but in the long run this was the best decision the Oilers could make, as they have freed up a ton of money for them to use on building a long-term Stanley Cup contending roster. The team got back a lot of draft picks and even a prospect over the last week via the two offer sheets and trades, so the future is no doubt still looking unbelievably bright for the franchise.
