The Edmonton Oilers are set to make a controversial move later today, as their former 40-goal scorer is reportedly going to be benched in a shock to fans.

At this point, it really seems like a former 40-goal scorer of the Oilers might be a healthy scratch tonight. News that has split fans and analysts alike as he has been fighting for his roster life as of late.

When he was a healthy scratch on December 29, the former 40-goal scorer had just 12 points in 35 games, and frustration had reached an all-time high.

Jeff Skinner's name has popped up in trade rumors

With even some trade rumors mixed in, whispers emerged that he might be open to a move out of Edmonton, but insiders like David Staples suggested Jeff Skinner would need a «firm push» to leave.

Instead, Skinner seemed to dig in, determined to show he belonged. Since getting back into the lineup, Skinner has worked hard to raise his level of play. Over the last three games, he's tallied three points and looked far more into it on the ice.

Coach Knoblauch seemed to reward him by placing him on a new-look third line with Zach Hyman and Adam Henrique, a line that has at least generated some much-needed offense of late.

Assembled to give the Oilers balance throughout their lineup, the new trio has been quite good so far. Skinner had 12:21 of ice time in the last outing, the most he had since mid-December.

Henrique and Hyman feel rejuvenated alongside one another as well, which begs the question if this trio can keep the puck rolling. Of course, questions about Skinner's future still linger. It doesn't help that he will likely be scratched tonight.

"It looks like, based on practice today, Jeff Skinner will be the forward in the pressbox tomorrow,"

Skinner has a shooting percentage of 8.2 percent, which is still below his career average of 11.1 percent, so there are better days ahead if he can find consistency. After all, this is the same player who recorded 82 points just two seasons ago.

For now, the specter of a healthy scratch is a big one. Whether as a step backward or a prerequisite to redemption, the Skinner story in Edmonton is far from over.
