The Florida Panthers are dominating the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Finals, and now a Florida journalist is taking a victory lap over his recent comments. Heading into the 2024 Stanley Cup Finals, there was expectations of a competitive series, but thus far it's been all Panthers as they have taken a 3-0 lead over the Oilers. Before the series began, Miami Herald writer Greg Cote had some choice words for Connor McDavid, even going as far as to say that he was overrated; «Connor McDavid is overrated. Boom. He puts up big, impressive stats, yes. Fine. But should he really be called generational,' called the best player in the sport, when in nine seasons he has yet to lead his team to a Stanley Cup?» While McDavid has dominated on the way to the Stanley Cup Finals, he, like the rest of the team have struggled offensively, with the Oilers top five goal scorers of the regular season combining for zero goals through three games. The series may not be over, but Cote has already doubled down and taken a victory lap on his comments in his latest piece; Connor McDavid has proved McOverrated (like a wise man once said) and Leon Draisaitl has been Dry-saital, neither scoring a goal in this Final,» he wrote. Also, Oilers goalie Stuart Skinner has been pretty bad, and defenseman Darnell Nurse has been worse.

McDavid remains a fantastic talent, but on the brightest stage he certainly hasn't looked like himself, so it's hard to argue with Cote's comments at this point. Before he was done however, the veteran columnist took a shot at Canada as well, like many Americans have in recent times; The country that invented hockey last won a Stanley Cup in 1993, and that country must be weeping in June yet again. On the bright side, Canada, there's still curling, eh? At this point, it's all Panthers in this series, with the team being just one victory away from their first ever Stanley Cup, so expect much more of this in the coming weeks if that indeed does happen.
