Today NHL insider Bob Stauffer spoke about Evander Kane and the extreme measures he took to be able to play in the Stanley Cup Finals.

During the 2023-24 season, Evander Kane was dealing with severe health problems including several abdominal injuries that he played through for much of the season.

This led to him playing through these injuries deep into the Stanley Cup Playoffs with the Edmonton Oilers, who eventually went to the Finals and lost against the Florida Panthers.

During the series, Kane played the first couple of games but eventually had to shut himself down for the year before having offseason surgery.

At the time of the surgery, not much was known about Kane's recovery time beyond the fact that he would be out until at least January.

With January quickly approaching Edmonton Oilers reporter Bob Stauffer spoke and gave an update on the severity of Kane's injury and his recovery progress.

According to Stauffer's reports Kane was dealing with extreme amounts of pain during the Stanley Cup Finals and received several painkiller shots before each of the games he attempted to play in.

To this point in Kane's recovery nothing was known about the extreme lengths he went to try and play and be there for his team.

With surgery now done Stauffer was able to provide an update on Kane going forward and it is on that is disappointing for Oilers fans.

Bob Stauffer provides a frustrating update on Evander Kane' return date

While talking about Kane's continued recovery Stauffer opened up on the expected timeline for a return to game action.

With his surgery in September and an original recovery time of 5-6 months he would be expected to be back in January or February.

Instead according to Stauffer the Oilers expect Kane to miss at least into the month of March before getting back in the lineup.

This is incredibly frustrating for an Oilers team that is still struggling with depth scoring and could use the boost in goal-scoring, physicality, and overall swagger that Kane brings.

For now, the Oilers will have to continue along without him and see if they can stay near the top of the Pacific Division to set Kane up for a stretch run where he can get back into playing shape on the fly before the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

As more updates are provided on Kane's injury status and potential return we will pass along the latest details.
