The Edmonton Oilers have officially decided to cancel all the on-ice sessions of the 2024 development camp. In a surprising turn of events, it was announced by reporter Jason Gregor that the Oilers decided to concentrate on the educational aspect of the development camp instead of on-ice activities. Prospects will spend their days in a classroom, learning about different topics related to hockey and life in general. Here's what Gregor posted on X: This year it will be just off the ice. No on-ice sessions. Will be more learning.

Didn't feel the need to have on ice. Kids are on ice all the time now. Wise decision in my eyes. Will be more educational about life skills, cooking, nutrition, training, money management.

NHL teams often like to see their prospects together on the ice during the summer to let them get to know each other better as well as create a healthy and competitive atmosphere.

The Oilers decided to go in another direction, and we should know if this pays off at the next training camp in September. The organization hopes that educating their prospects will make them better human beings and therefore, better hockey players.
