NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has reported that Oilers Evander Kane won't be back in the lineup until January or February at the earliest after successful surgery. The Oilers winger underwent successful surgery in New York to repair two torn hip adductor muscles, two hernias, and two torn lower abdominal muscles. There is no exact return date, but Kane figures to be out until at least January or February, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Kane suffered the injuries and played much of last season and through the playoffs with a sports hernia. All told he missed just 10 games, but his production really did suffer. The star was quite below average in post-season action, where he only scored four times and eight points in 20 games while seeing lessened ice time-quite a contrast to his 2022 playoff form when he was tops in the league with 13 goals. While Evander Kane's $5.125 million cap hit could go on long-term injured reserve, it's not anticipated that Edmonton will go that route. The recent moves, including trading Cody Ceci and decisions not to match offer sheets for Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway, have the Oilers cap-compliant with a 22-player roster. Edmonton has $945,833 in cap space, so if needed, a lower-cost player could fit in Kane's spot.
