The Edmonton Oilers are looking to lock up Leon Draisaitl before the 2024/25 season begins, and from all accounts, things are trending in that direction. For months now, all the talk in Edmonton has been about a potential extension for superstar forward Leon Draisaitl, and for much of that time, it has been expected that a deal will get done before next season begins. The latest update on the situation remains largely the same, although a recent report has revealed that No. 29 could chase anywhere as high as $14.5 million AAV on his next deal.

However, all expectations are that if Draisaitl and the Oilers can work together on an eight-year deal, he is willing to take a pay cut that will pay him anywhere between $13M and $13.5M over the eight seasons. This would put him right up there with the likes of Auston Matthews as the NHL's highest paid players, and deservingly so, as Draisaitl has been a huge part of a team that has become a powerhouse in the Western Conference. Over the past six years, Draisaitl has tallied over 100 points in five of those, with the long 84 point season coming in a shortened 56 game campaign, and given how crucial he is to the success of Connor McDavid and this team, expect a deal to get done with a huge payday for Leon Draisaitl.
