With the NHL trade deadline now come and gone one reporter believes the Edmonton Oilers could be at risk of losing Connor McDavid in the near future.

The Edmonton Oilers were one of the most inactive teams at the NHL Trade Deadline making a deal for Jake Walman the day before the deadline.

The trade was seen as a solid move for the Oilers along with the additions of Max Jones and Trent Frederic earlier in the week but lacked an all-in move that many were hoping for.

Along with the lack of flash, the Oilers left what was a clear need between the pipes unaddressed by GM Stan Bowman and the front office.

It was revealed that the Oilers did try to make a splash and trade for Mikko Rantanen but ultimately weren't willing to give up enough losing out on him to the Dallas Stars.

This has led to a lot of frustration from fans and the media toward the front office believing that they are not doing enough to help Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl get back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Now a new article from Lyle Fitzsimmons of Bleacher Report has suggested that the Oilers' failure to make a splash could impact Connor McDavid's future in Edmonton.

Reporter Believes Connor McDavid Could Be Looking To Leave The Edmonton Oilers

In a new article for Bleacher Report, journalist Lyle Fitzsimmons dove into the disappointing deadline for the Edmonton Oilers.

Fitzsimmons first pointed to the fact that several other contending teams in the Western Conference made major shake-ups while the Oilers barely made moves.

The NHL's trade deadline provided its annual shift in the competitive paradigm, with landscape-altering bombs dropped in cities across the Western Conference map, particularly Dallas and Denver, and elsewhere in the league as well. Everywhere, it seems, but Edmonton.

Fitzsimmons goes on to reveal that he is now concerned that an early playoff exit could lead Connor McDavid to re-consider an extension with the Edmonton Oilers as his contract is expected to expire after next season.

Running mate Draisaitl giddily re-upped for eight years in the afterglow of the near-miss comeback against Florida last summer, but the specter of an early-round ouster this time is less likely to entice McDavid to stay put and more likely to start other teams working on would-be trade deadline packages to entice No. 97 to head elsewhere next March.

While there has not been a lot of concern so far about McDavid's impending extension talks with the Oilers it does at some point become alarming that no news has come to the surface.

At the moment, there is no reason to panic regarding McDavid's future however, if the Oilers go into next season without an extension done between the two sides things become immediately concerning.

With the deadline passed the extension of Connor McDavid becomes the top and quite frankly only priority for Stan Bowman and the front office until the situation is resolved.

As more news is reported on this situation and McDavid's long-term future in Edmonton we will pass the details along to you.
