Oscar Klefbom played every NHL game with the Edmonton Oilers and mysteriously vanished for the last three years. He claims this was due to an injury.

The last time that Oscar Klefbom stepped foot on the ice was in August 2020, and though he has never officially announced his retirement or ever even provided an explanation as to why he mysteriously vanished, he has finally decided to come clean about the reasons behind this mystery.

The former first-round pick is still only 31-years-old, and was interviewed from his home in Sweden. He explained that back in 2012, he suffered a pretty serious shoulder injury in Sweden, and claims to have never truly fully recovered from it.

"The problems began back in 2012, when he was loaned out to his parent club Färjestad. Klefbom was hit in the back during a match in Växjö, fell into the boards and dislocated his left shoulder.

The 31-year-old says that the shoulder never really got better. It was tightened up to prevent it from popping out again, which ultimately led to osteoarthritis.

More blows followed, and Klefbom played on painkillers while his body took a beating. His stomach gave up the ghost after a multi-year course of anti-inflammatories and injections."

Klefbom was then asked about why he didn't want to open up about this earlier and provide details to fans around the league as to why he wasn't around. Klefbom said the reason for this was because it was a difficult mental struggle. He claims to have missed the game so much and have been so disappointed that he couldn't be a part of it that he could not even watch a single Oilers game since 2020.

"It was a choice I made. I told Edmonton that I wanted to lay very low with what was going to happen and what the situation is. They were perfectly fine with that. From my side, it was also because I thought it was too difficult to talk about it.

I have barely watched a single Oilers game since I quit. It's been too hard. When I look, I just see myself there, see what I would do myself. It has been a struggle mentally."

Klefbom now calls Sweden his home and says to have made a good amount of income from the NHL, even though his career was cut short. He does want to find work in the hockey industry one day as he loves the game so much.

Oscar Klefbom played in a total of 378 NHL games, all with the Oilers, and managed to score 34 goals and add 122 assists.
