Tyler Ennis didn't care about his small size. He made a name for himself anyways in the NHL. Standing at just 5-foot-9, Ennis was never the biggest guy on the ice, but his heart and determination proved big things can come in small packages. Drafted in the first round by the Sabres back in 2008, he quickly silenced the critics and made an impact, playing eight strong seasons in Buffalo.

Ennis didn't record any Stanley Cup or All-Star appearances, but his time with the Sabres, especially his career-high 49-point season in 2010-11, showed he had what it takes to compete with the best. He's also part of the most recent team in franchise history to make the playoffs.

After Buffalo, he went on to suit up for the Minnesota Wild, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, and Ottawa Senators, before finishing his career overseas. Altogether, he played 700 NHL games, tallying 144 goals and 346 points.

Before his NHL career, the Edmonton native spent his junior career with the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL and played for Canada in the 2009 World Juniors, helping them to a gold medal. While we'll miss seeing the 34 year-old on the ice, his experience and passion for the game leave the door wide open for a future role behind the scenes. Hockey fans can only wonder what's next for a guy who brought so much energy and grit to every shift, never taking a day in the game for granted. Thanks for inspiring young players everywhere Tyler.
