Today a new story has come out confirming that the Florida Panthers were able to use a little-known rule to sneak two extra names onto the Stanley Cup when it was engraved.

Each season after the Stanley Cup is awarded to the series winner it is sent off to be engraved in Montreal. Each team is only allowed to have a certain number of personnel on the Stanley Cup. For players, the general rule of eligibility is playing 41 regular season games.

A player is required to have appeared in at least 41 regular-season games with a team, or one Stanley Cup Final game, to be eligible to have his name engraved on the trophy.

This was the law of the land for who was eligible to get their name on the Stanley Cup for decades. However, a change to the rules in 1994 gave more flexibility to teams and created a loophole the Florida Panthers elected to use.

Florida Panthers use exemption rule to add 2 players to the Stanley Cup

The Stanley Cup has officially been engraved and revealed with the names of those eligible from the Florida Panthers. Two unexpected names Jonah Gadjovich and Josh Mahura were on the Stanley Cup. This means that the Florida Panthers likely filed an exemption to have those players added.

In 1994, a stipulation was added to allow a team to petition the Commissioner for permission to have players' names put on the Stanley Cup if extenuating circumstances prevented them from being available to play. The management staff engraved on the trophy is determined by the team. However, it must be approved by the Hockey Hall of Fame and NHL. The maximum number of names a championship team can engrave on the trophy is 55.

The NHL made two exceptions for players that would get their names on the cup with the #Panthers, despite not reaching the games played eligibility:

Josh Mahura (@joshmahura) 🇨🇦

Both deserved for sure, great to see the team

The Florida Panthers and each of the players and personnel added to the Stanley Cup will now all get their day with the trophy. This time the players and their families will have the opportunity to lay their eyes upon their own name on the Stanley Cup.
