In one of the most shocking waiver moves of the season, the Los Angeles Kings have placed one of their most talented young forwards on waivers today.

The Los Angeles Kings have placed winger Arthur Kaliyev on waivers, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman. Arthur Kaliyev fractured his clavicle in preseason action but was still on season-opening injured reserve until December 28th.

The Utah Hockey Club also claimed Nick DeSimone from New Jersey as he was placed on waivers yesterday.

Kaliyev was loaned to the AHL's Ontario Reign for a conditioning stint on December 10th, notching two points over five games.

Now that he's been activated off of IR, Kaliyev must pass through waivers, and the Kings are banking on him clearing through to complete his reassignment to the minors.

In his recent stint with Ontario, Kaliyev got his first AHL games in since the 2020-21 season. He's since fought for a regular role in the Kings' lineup, but that role has varied.

The 33rd overall draft pick in 2019, Kaliyev was once a top prospect for Los Angeles. He made his NHL debut in 2021-22, recording 14 goals and 27 points as a rookie.

The season after that, he seemed primed to better those totals until an undisclosed injury shelved him from December to mid-February, limiting him to 56 games.

Despite missing time, Kaliyev recorded 13 goals and 28 points, nearly matching his rookie output. However, the momentum stalled last season when he scored just 15 points in 51 games and was scratched regularly.

It could be seen as a big setback in regards to the NHL aspirations of Kaliyev with this latest move. Though he's flashed scoring capability with 35 goals and 71 points in 188 career games, he has not cemented a regular role with the Kings.

With some upside on his offensive game, he could have some appeal on the waiver wire, where another team could claim him and receive a relatively cheap, middle-six scorer.

With arbitration rights this summer as a restricted free agent, Kaliyev still only carries an incredibly manageable $825K cap hit.
