Today New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy is surrounded by debate over a video of him humiliating his players in front of a crowd of fans during an open practice. The New York Islanders find themselves at the bottom of the Metropolitan Division and coming off an embarrassing loss to the Buffalo Sabres who were previously on a 13-game losing streak. The struggles for the Islanders are nothing new this season as they also recently lost to the Chicago Blackhawks who are near the bottom of the Western Conference leading Roy to make comments out of frustration towards his team.

With the Islanders usually being a perennial playoff contender being at the bottom of their division is unacceptable. Today the Islanders had an open practice with fans in attendance before their upcoming game against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Patrick Roy calls out his teams during an open practice in front of fans
During that practice head coach Patrick Roy made the controversial decision to speak to the fans directly and admit that the Islanders are not playing to the standard that he set and that he is working hard to get it corrected.

This admission of failure gained cheers from the fans who just want to see their team improve and get back in playoff contention. However, from the perspective of the players, this could be seen as an embarrassing moment where their head coach feels forced to address fans regarding the team's effort and inability to string wins together. While things are off to an awful start for the Islanders this season there is still time for improvement as they are just 5 points out of a playoff spot with over half of the season still left. If Roy and the Islanders cannot turn things around though there could be major changes coming in New York starting with a new head coach behind the bench with a new message. The Islanders will have their first opportunity to show improvement both in effort and skill against the Pittsburgh Penguins
