Today new reports have come out confirming that New York Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin will be signing a record-breaking contract for a goalie. The New York Rangers and Igor Shesterkin have been working hard on a contract extension throughout the early part of the season. New reports coming in today seem to indicate that a deal is done. According to ESPN insider Kevin Weekes, his sources believe a contract worth around $11.5 million per season is where the contract will land.

This has further been supported by former New York Rangers front office member Neil Smith as well. He indicated that things are coming near a close in negotiations between the two sides.

This is a huge deal for the New York Rangers, Igor Shesterkin, and the future of the NHL and its contracts. To this point, the highest-paid goaltender in NHL history was Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens. He signed an 8-year deal worth 10.5 million dollars. With this new deal, Igor Shesterkin officially passes that number with his new major extension.

For the New York Rangers, this is a huge investment alongside other stars like Artemi Panarin and Alexis Lafreniere. Now the question will be whether or not this move pays off for the Rangers or not.
Are the New York Rangers making a mistake giving Igor Shesterkin this contract
Anytime a team in a sport gives a record-breaking deal to a player the question becomes is it worth it? A great example of this in recent years comes from the NFL where the Cleveland Browns are certainly regretting giving Deshaun Watson a massive contract. For the Rangers though this does not seem to be the case. GM Chris Drury knows that an elite goaltender can be the key to success in the NHL. During his playing days, Chris Drury played in front of two of the best goaltenders of his era Patrick Roy and Ryan Miller. His success along with these players likely instilled the immense value of a game-changing goaltender. In his career, Igor Shesterkin has been that game-changing goaltender for the New York Rangers. In every NHL season that Igor Shesterkin has played he has had a save percentage over 0.912 and a goals-against average below 2.65. In the modern era with scoring going up every season again, these numbers are as good as it gets. At just 28 years old Igor Shesterkin has plenty of hockey ahead of him and likely has not even hit his goalie prime. Often goaltenders can succeed later in their career which could make this Igor Shesterkin contract look even better in the long run.
