It's been reported by several NHL insiders that the Rangers are going to place their captain Jacob Trouba on waivers today, paving the way for any team to claim him.

Jacob Trouba has been at the center of trade rumors since last summer, and his $8 million AAV deal has come under greater scrutiny with subpar performances.

With reports suggesting the Rangers will finally move on from the 30-year-old defenseman, speculation is growing a deal could be consummated as early as today, as the Rangers have been rumored to be making big changes.

Of course, Renaud Lavoie and Chris Johnston tweeted via X that Jacob Trouba wasn't present at the Rangers' morning skate as the team readied for the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Trouba is thus expected to hit the NHL waiver wire or be traded. With that, 22-year-old defenseman Victor Mancini was called up from the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack; he'll likely take his spot on the roster.

This season, Trouba has only six assists in 24 games, with 22 penalty minutes and a -3 rating.

In his 12-season career, the 2012 ninth-overall pick of the Winnipeg Jets has played 772 games, totaling 73 goals, 242 assists, and 626 penalty minutes in the regular season, along with 19 points and 76 penalty minutes in 73 playoff appearances.

The situation is under a close watch for fans and analysts alike, as players of Trouba's caliber rarely hit waivers. Teams with available cap space near the bottom of the standings could be chomping at the bit to claim him.

The same could be said for teams at the top of the standings such as the Toronto Maple Leafs and Edmonton Oilers.

They could also submit a claim for Trouba, and should none of the bottom teams claim him, he could very well end up in one of the top teams too.

Whatever the outcome, Rangers GM Chris Drury will soon need to explain the team's decision. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.
