GM of the St. Louis Blues Doug Armstrong revealed today that he had plans to offer sheet Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg of the Oilers for many weeks.

Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg are officially members of the St. Louis Blues, for only seven days that is, as the Edmonton Oilers will have just one week to decide if they want to match those offers or say goodbye to both players.

Not all is rosy for the Blues at the moment, as they are currently over the salary cap. The team will need to make a trade or put some players on waivers or possibly even buy out some players in order to fit Dylan Holloway and Philip Broberg on their team. GM Doug Armstrong has been thinking about this and planning for a while now, and he purposely overpaid for these two Oilers players in order to put massive pressure on GM of the Oilers Stan Bowman to make a decision, with the hope that they will walk away from matching the offer sheet due to it being simply too high.

Stan Bowman already had a tough task entering as the GM of the Oilers, as not only was he the subject of major controversy, but he also had to clean up some of the mess that Ken Holland left, who was accused of overpaying and handing out a bunch of money on awful contracts. The last thing Bowman wants to do is also overpay like his predecessor did, which is why the signs point to the Oilers likely walking away from these two players.

If the Oilers do decide to match both these offer sheets, they will be $7.2 million over the salary cap. They could always put Evander Kane on LTIR as he is dealing with injuries at the moment, and that would only lower the team to $3.675 million over the cap. They would then have to likely trade Cody Ceci for draft picks to free up an additional $3.25 million, and then demote another player to the AHL. It would take all that to make things work, and Evander Kane has stated he has no interest in being placed on LTIR, so this is going to be a very difficult task ahead for Bowman to navigate.
