Maple Leafs' Pontus Holmberg had to leave the game early last night against the Lightning after sustaining an injury, and Craig Berube has provided an update. The Toronto Maple Leafs defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-3 on Monday, taking their third straight regular-season game against this Atlantic Division rival. A big win for Toronto, keeping them atop the divisional standings courtesy once again of their high-powered top line and some solid goalie play courtesy of Joseph Woll. Of course, not all was perfect.
Pontus Holmberg leaves the game early with an injury
The Leafs lost another man to injury when forward Pontus Holmberg was forced to leave a game in which he'd crashed hard into the boards on a tripping penalty committed by defenceman Emil Lilleberg.

That's just about the exact kind of health problem the Leafs have been fighting all year.
Craig Berube seems to believe Holmberg will be fine
Of course, head coach Craig Berube attempted to head off overreaction by stating he didn't believe Holmberg's injury to be serious, perhaps even just day-to-day. The thing is, he's said that before about players who are still out weeks later. He'll be fine. - Craig Berube

The 25-year-old Holmberg has generally been a healthy player, having missed just a few games due to illness. This year, he's chipped in some offense, albeit in small quantities, with two goals and five assists, but has been more valuable for his defense, with 29 blocks. Should he miss any significant amount of time, that could tighten Toronto's center depth, particularly since John Tavares remains on the mend from a leg injury, and it's unclear when he'll return. The loss of Holmberg would be a sizeable one, but Toronto has taken on plenty this season and may need to once more.
