Today, NHL insider David Pagnotta reported that the Maple Leafs might consider trading for Chris Tanev's brother, Brandon Tanev.

Earlier today the Toronto Maple Leafs were dealt some difficult injury news with Max Pacioretty being ruled out against the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The injury to Pacioretty is once again a reminder that the Maple Leafs lack serious depth in their forward corps and could use a major upgrade at the NHL trade deadline.

With the deadline approaching several different options have been provided by insiders and analysts over the past couple of weeks.

Today a new report from insider David Pagnotta has indicated that he would expect the Maple Leafs to try and trade from Brandon Tanev from the Seattle Kraken.

Maple Leafs linked to Chris Tanev's brother Brandon in potential deadline deal

For much of the 2024-25 NHL season, the media and fans have spoken and debated about the Maple Leafs' lack of depth.

With John Tavares playing fewer minutes on average the Maple Leafs have been searching for more forwards to make an impact on the second and third lines to fill in those gaps.

According to Pagnotta one player who could be a perfect fit for that role is Seattle Kraken forward Brandon Tanev.

There's another player out there in Seattle, not a center, but a winger, Chris [Tanev's] brother. Like, you bring in Brandon Tanev -- he's the guy that provides that extra spark, physically, can keep up with the pace of play for most of the game, especially come playoff time when it tightens up, and he can get you that key goal every now and again

While Tanev is not the biggest name that will likely be traded at the NHL Trade Deadline he is a player that can be a difference-maker in the types of games the Maple Leafs have struggled in.

While Tanev is not a center that the Maple Leafs would likely covet more he does bring a lot of the energy and defensive elements that a center typically does and could potentially fill in those gaps that the Maple Leafs have at the moment.

At 33 years old Brandon Tanev is not a long-term solution for the Maple Leafs but could be a cheap and effective addition that will also be good for the culture of the Maple Leafs come playoff time.

Pagnotta's full comments on Tanev and other potential trade candidates for the Maple Leafs can be seen below.

As the NHL Trade Deadline approaches we will share more updates regarding the Maple Leafs' plans as they become more clear.
