This evening new comments from Elliotte Friedman have circulated where he speculates about decisions that led to Anthony Stolarz's injury. Last night Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Anthony Stolarz suffered an injury against the Anaheim Ducks. The injury is the latest in a long list of frustrating injuries to key players for the Maple Leafs this season including fellow goaltender Joseph Woll. After practice today Woll opened up about his feelings regarding Stolarz's injury and his mindset as he now once again becomes the main guy in Stolarz's absence. Obviously, I'm sad for him. At the same time, I've got a job to do, and we have to kind of trigger that on, so I hope he's alright. Today it was revealed that Stolarz is not expected to be out long-term due to his injury but the team will know more tomorrow. With this information now known the conversation can shift back to overall what are the Toronto Maple Leafs doing wrong as an organization that has led to so many injuries. Particularly for their goaltenders both Woll and Stolarz have dealt with injuries this season and going back to last season the Maple Leafs were ravaged by goaltending injuries. With this frustrating trend of goaltending injuries for the Maple Leafs NHL insider Elliotte Friedman decided to try and figure out what might be leading to these consistent injuries.
Elliotte Friedman reveals the Maple Leafs are making a key mistake with their goalies
During a new segment of his 32 Thoughts Podcast Friedman decided to talk about the Maple Leafs goalie injury issues. Friedman admitted that the Maple Leafs themselves were hesitant with how much Stolarz had been playing recently and were beginning to be concerned over his workload. But I don't think those guys were crazy about Stolarz, starting on Thursday, because he played Tuesday. He played great. He had a heavy workload. Not a guy who's played a lot, he's got an injury history At the same time, Friedman confirmed that the Maple Leafs have backed themselves into a corner with two goalies who both have injury histories that have to be handled carefully. This means that regardless of which goalie Craig Berube decides to start there is immense potential for an injury if one goaltender is given too much of the workload. It's not like Woll doesn't have an injury history, too... because Stolarz hasn't played a ton, and because Woll hasn't played a time, ... you're kind of damned if you do Now the Toronto Maple Leafs have forced themselves into a situation where Woll will be relied on a lot over the next few games as Stolarz is being evaluated. Hopefully things are not as bad as they seem for Stolarz and he can return soon but more importantly the Maple Leafs when he returns need to have a plan of action to keep both goaltenders in the lineup going forward.
