A major update has been provided on the future of Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Timothy Liljegren as the season gets underway.

Throughout the NHL preseason Maple Leafs defenseman Timothy Liljegren has created a lot of discussion around his future. After being a vital part of the Maple Leafs defensive group under former head coach Sheldon Keefe things seem to have changed now.

The Toronto Maple Leafs open their season against the Montreal Canadiens tonight. When the lines were released for the Maple Leafs defenseman Timothy Liljegren was noteably not in the lineup.

This caused a lot of discussion about the future of Timothy Liljegren in Toronto. Now a new report from NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has confirmed the long-term plan involving Timothy Liljegren.

Elliotte Friedman confirms the Maple Leafs intend to trade Timothy Liljegren

As part of his weekly 32 Thoughts column column NHL insider Elliotte Friedman discussed the situation that is ongoing with Timothy Liljegren. According to his sources, the Maple Leafs are working to find a trade partner for a Timothy Liljegren deal.

Sounds like Toronto is working to find a landing spot for Timothy Liljegren. He's down the depth chart, not a situation anyone is happy with.

After Timothy Liljegren was not part of the opening night lineup this was likely always the end destination. Timothy Liljegren is still just 25 years old and has the pedigree of being a former first-round pick in 2017. Unfortunately, the offensive flair he once had has not resurfaced at the NHL level as Timothy Liljegren's career high in points is just 23.

Trade rumors have been following Timothy Liljegren all summer. During NHL free agency NHL insider Chris Johnston had heard rumblings of a Liljegren move starting to be discussed.

With the Toronto Maple Leafs adding Chris Tanev and Oliver Ekman-Larsson over the summer they had an excess of defensemen coming into this season. Ekman-Larsson who was signed as a free agent brings many of the same qualities as Timothy Liljegren with more of a veteran presence. There always was going to be an odd man out. Now it is clear that Timothy Liljegren is that odd man out who will be finding a new home soon.

As more information is provided on a Timothy Liljegren trade and a potential new home we will pass it along to you.
