There was a lot of NHL waiver action today, moves that saw Leafs' Matt Benning clear, former Leafs goaltender James Reimer placed, and another goalie claimed.

In today's NHL waiver update, one of the surprises was a roster move featuring veteran netminder and former Maple Leaf James Reimer.

Reimer has appeared in over 500 games across his career and, once again, found himself on the waiver wire amidst recent high-profile waiving activity.

The 36-year-old Reimer has appeared in just two games this season with the Anaheim Ducks, both starts coming against the New Jersey Devils and Vegas Golden Knights.

He struggled, allowing nine goals combined, and had seemingly lost the confidence of head coach Greg Cronin.

Toronto's Matt Benning, who was placed on waivers by the team yesterday, cleared and will be assigned to the AHL Marlies. Friedman followed that up by noting that Athanasiou had also cleared waivers.

Earlier in the week, the Columbus Blue Jackets claimed defenseman Dante Fabbro, while forwards Andreas Athanasiou of the Blackhawks and goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen of the Avalanche were also surprisingly waived.

Today, insider Elliotte Friedman reported that defenseman Riley Stillman had also been waived, in addition to Reimer.

Friedman also added that Kahkonen was claimed by the Winnipeg Jets, returning to the team that initially placed him on waivers back in October.

If Reimer isn't claimed, he could head back to the AHL. The pending UFA's current NHL contract is a one-year, $1 million deal.

That kind of cap hit can make him a more practical claim for any team looking for experienced goaltending depth.

With John Gibson finally back from his injury, the Ducks have a clear number one in goal.

His November 10 return to action against the Columbus Blue Jackets included 40 saves on 42 shots to show he is ready to take the backstopping reins again for Anaheim.

The healthy return of Gibson also diminishes the need to keep both Reimer and backup Lukas Dostal at the NHL level.

The Leafs have had no shortage of injuries this year, including their goaltending when Joseph Woll went down early in the season.

Would GM Brad Treliving perhaps circle back to James Reimer as some goaltending depth just in case more injuries pop up? We'll know in less than 24 hours.
