Kyle Dubas has recently made some comments where he revealed he is ready to trade everyone on the Pittsburgh Penguins with the exception of Sidney Crosby. What seemed like a hopeful finish in Washington just days earlier, optimism did not take long to dissipate surrounding the Penguins. From the drop of the puck, Pittsburgh was overmatched and appeared unprepared, and for all intents and purposes, never in the game. The same old thing, defenseman Marcus Pettersson summarized succinctly, which has been the theme of an inconsistent season with struggle after struggle on defense. 16,526 people had to witness this nightmare on Monday evening for the Penguins at PPG Paints Arena, as they watched in horror a first-period collapse against the Dallas Stars. The Penguins allowed six goals in the opening period, a historic low, as they've never conceded that many goals in a first period at home before.

At 6-9-2, the Penguins' prospects for the remainder of this season are grim. A third-straight playoff miss looms large. General Manager Kyle Dubas has reportedly told those close to him that everyone on the team is available to move, with one glaring exception: No. 87, Sidney Crosby. But just last night, mercurial hockey personality Paul Bissonnette suggested that even Crosby should consider leaving Pittsburgh to get a fresh start elsewhere, and he wants him in Colorado with Nathan MacKinnon. It's not to tear it all the way down, but rather for Dubas and the front office to put together a roster that can compete this season and make good on that promise to Crosby that they'll try to keep competitive.

A road trip with assistant GM Jason Spezza to various games of other teams, suggests the Penguins are serious about securing the talent they need now and not just some grand plan for the future. Although Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, Bryan Rust, and Erik Karlsson have no-movement clauses, the important players always find ways to move forward when the right circumstances come their way. Of course, Monday's lopsided loss made that crystal clear, and clearer than ever: Pittsburgh's management needs to make a big move if they wish to save this season with Crosby still central to their ambitions.
