Former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Michael Hutchinson got released from his professional tryout with the New Jersey Devils.

The New Jersey Devils completely revamped their goaltending unit over the summer by acquiring Jacob Markstrom from the Calgary Flames and Jake Allen from the Montreal Canadiens. Markstrom is expected to be number one, while Allen should be number two.

With all that depth between the pipes, the Devils had to make tough choices, including parting ways with players signed on professional tryouts. That's what they did by releasing Michael Hutchinson from his contract.

Hutchinson, 34, played 154 NHL games in his career with the Winnipeg Jets, Florida Panthers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Colorado Avalanche, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Detroit Red Wings. He has a 57-62-18 record and has maintained a .903 save percentage as well as 2.93 GAA.

In the last season, he played only one game in the NHL, with the Islanders. He mainly competed in the AHL, with the Grand Rapids Griffins, tallying a 14-14-3 record and a .892 SV%.

Hutchinson still has time to sign a contract before the next season, but time is ticking. Not a lot of teams are still looking to add a goaltender to their roster, but with injuries, you never know when an offer will come.

We saw it yesterday with the Boston Bruins claiming Jiri Patera from the Vancouver Canucks. Because of their complicated situation with Jeremy Swayman, they decided to add another member to their goalie unit.

A scenario like this one could happen with Hutchinson. It wouldn't be surprising to see a team decide to sign him to a two-way contract to add a bit of depth to the goalie unit.
