Former NHL forward Jason Cirone sadly passed away today at the age of 53 after a battle with cancer.

The announcement came curtesy of the puck empire account on Instagram today, as they memorialized with with a post celebrating his career.

We regret to announce the passing of Italian national team legend and former NHLer, Jason Cirone 🇮🇹🇨🇦 at the age of 53, after battling with cancer.

Cirone was a former third round draft pick of the Winnipeg Jets in 1989. As there were far fewer teams in the league at the time, he was selected 46th overall, with some hype around him. He only got into three NHL games in his career, all of which came with the Jets during the 1991-92 season. However, he would go on to have a very long and successful career after that, outside the NHL. He spent many years playing in various leagues around North America including the AHL, ECHL, and the now-defunct Independent Hockey League. Where ever he went he was always an effective player, putting up near point-per-game seasons several times.

Eventually, Cirone moved to Italy full-time to play for Asiago of the Italian pro league where he spent six seasons. In total, he put up 92 goals and 194 points in 190 league games. He would also represent Italy in international events, including the 2006 winter games. He will be dearly missed.
