Throughout much of the NHL season Auston Matthews has been dealing with a mystery injury and now today a former Maple Leaf has bashed the team for failing Matthews.

This season has been frustrating for Maple Leafs fans when it comes to injuries, from Joseph Woll's injury before opening night to Auston Matthews' recent injury saga.

The frustration comes from fans after the Maple Leafs have continued to fail in helping players stay away from chronic injuries and once again that seems to be the case.

Earlier this season Matthews missed almost an entire month including a trip to Germany to heal from an unspecified injury.

With the Maple Leafs allowing Matthews to step away from the team for that long fans and the media assumed the issue was handled and wouldn't be a problem going forward.

Instead, Matthews is now once again out after taking a cross-check from Buffalo Sabres defenseman Dennis Gilbert.

According to the Maple Leafs as well as other sources the injury is an aggravation of the one that Matthews has dealt with all season.

The confirmation that Matthews is hurt due to the same issue has frustrated former Maple Leaf and current analyst Jay Rosehill who believes the Maple Leafs are failing Matthews.

Jay Rosehill bashes the Maple Leafs for their handling of Auston Matthews injury

On a new episode of Leafs Morning Take former Maple Leafs defenseman Jay Rosehill gave his thoughts on the Matthews injury saga.

Rosehill began by giving a summary of the events to this point talking about all of the steps Matthews took to return and the secrecy surrounding his exact injury.

And then we thought he was, like, ready to come back. And he's in Germany, something's going on, and I don't know what it is, but it kind of seems like it's a torso. He trunk like a back or something. I'm not sure, but it doesn't seem to be moving well, that cross-check, kind of the side, seemed to cripple him.

Rosehill then echoed the thoughts of many fans that Matthews doesn't need to be playing right now the Maple Leafs have plenty of talent to get by while he gets healthy.

I don't really want him playing 'til he's healthy, Rosehill said. These games are, you know, I don't want him looking like that in the playoffs. Or it's bye bye time like I don't want to. It's too important. The season is too big. You're peaking. This is a big time in this lease organization.

Rosehill finished off by asking the Maple Leafs front office why they are willing to take the risk of playing Matthews in December and also why he still has not pulled out of the 4 Nations Face-Off to focus on his recovery.

Why are you playing him in December when he can't even freaking move? And why is he going to the nation's Four Nations Cup for the nobody cares cup in a lot of ways to go hurt like, I don't like it at all, man, I'm more concerned in the postseason than to see this guy dragging through this entry for no reason.

At some point, the Maple Leafs staff will need to decide how much they are willing to risk Auston Matthews' long-term health to win regular season games.

If rest and recovery for another month or two allows him to return at 100 or near 100% for the Stanley Cup Playoffs it is a no-brainer decision.

As the season goes on it will be interesting to see how the Maple Leafs decide to handle Matthews and his return to game action.
