The Toronto Maple Leafs made the shocking announcement that Jani Hakanpaa had more work done to his nagging injury, in an update that will anger fans. On Wednesday, Team Finland named their Four Nations Face-Off roster, and somewhat surprisingly, injured Leafs defenseman Jani Hakanpaa was on it.

Speculation had been building about the lingering knee issues that have landed Jani Hakanpaa on injured reserve in Toronto. The Leafs have now confirmed, via NHL.com's Dave McCarthy, that Hakanpaa underwent another knee surgery.

This news is sure to upset and annoy some fans who have grown quite tired of this saga and just want to see him consistently back in the lineup. Leafs GM Brad Treliving has taken some heat over a few of his recent free-agent signings, and Hakanpaa has been the most contentious. The veteran blueliner isn't going to be out for very long, though, with reports indicating he'll be back on the ice soon. Hakanpaa's inclusion on Team Finland's roster reflects the national team's belief that he will be ready in time. His medical reports are probably indicating that he will be ready for the Four Nations Face-Off in February. The unfortunate thing is that Hakanpaa has not played much ice hockey since March when he had what was believed to be a career-threatening knee surgery. The surgery corrected a bone-on-bone condition, according to Steve Simmons of the 'Toronto Sun'. This season, Hakanpaa has played just four games, two with the Leafs and two with their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, recording no points and a -1 rating during his brief NHL stint. Fans will be watching to see how much longer this latest procedure Hakanpaa is dealing with will keep him out of the lineup, and they sure hope it won't be too long.
