Insider Nick Kypreos has dropped a bombshell: the Toronto Maple Leafs might be taking the captaincy away from John Tavares and giving it to Auston Matthews.

Kypreos shared on Sportsnet that the team is seriously considering this switch. Remember, last time around, Matthews was close to getting the C before they ultimately chose Tavares.

Nick Kypreos on SN discussing the Leafs potentially stripping the 'C' from Tavares:

"From what I'm hearing, the Leafs are contemplating taking the captaincy away from him and giving it to Auston. They will talk about it. I'm not saying it's going to happen, but it's real."

Tavares, despite being a solid leader, showed signs of aging last season. With 29 goals and 65 points, it was his lowest full-season total with the Leafs. And in the playoffs, he only managed one goal and two points.

Makes sense, Matthews is the straw that stirs the drink, put an A on Tavares and while you're at it take the A off Mitch and put it on Tanev.

The case for Matthews is he's the standout star. The offense revolves around him. It makes sense for him to be the official leader.

They will probably talk to JT, I can see him being willing to pass on the captaincy, let someone mew take the reigns. He's been captain for many years with the Isles and now Leafs. I am sure he wouldn't mind just playing.

This seems to be something Craig Berube, Brad Treliving, and the Maple Leafs brass are talking about. Let's see if it happens.
