This evening, A new report from Toronto reporter Steve Simmons connected the Maple Leafs to a trade deadline deal that would land them defenseman Jacob Trouba.

Last week the New York Rangers made a splash trade sending Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks.

The trade comes at the end of a long saga with the New York Rangers where Trouba was not happy with their treatment of him and the Rangers were looking to go in a new direction.

With Trouba heading to the Anaheim Ducks many viewed the move as a strange one for Anaheim as they are not currently playoff contenders and trading for a veteran like Trouba does not get them any closer.

With that in mind many sources have now begun speculating that Trouba's time with the Anaheim Ducks will be short and that he will again be traded before the NHL trade deadline.

These reports first came from Luke Fox, who speculated that the Ducks could send Trouba back to the East Coast to be closer to his wife, who will remain in New York City due to her career.

Could Ducks GM Pat Verbeek eat some of Trouba's salary and flip him to a contender? Perhaps send him back to the East, closer to his wife's hospital residency, for the final year-and-a-half of the defenceman's contract?

Now this evening a report from Maple Leafs reporter Steve Simmons has further expanded on this theory and thrown the Toronto Maple Leafs name in the mix of Eastern Conference teams who might be interested.

Reporter Steve Simmons links the Toronto Maple Leafs to Jacob Trouba

In a new article for The Toronto Sun, Steve Simmons discussed the NHL Trade Deadline, which is just a couple of months away.

According to Simmons the Maple Leafs are still big fans of Trouba's game and would love to trade for him if another team would be willing to take on some retained salary.

Leafs management likes big defenceman Jacob Trouba, the recently traded Rangers captain. And they might have some interest in Trouba, if Anaheim or somebody else eats a lot of salary, at the deadline.

While this clearly is not an imminent move for the Maple Leafs it is one that could be made in the coming months if the Anaheim Ducks find themselves firmly out of contention.

To Land Trouba the Maple Leafs would likely have to give up a package similar to that of the Ducks if not more due to the salary that would likely be retained.

That would mean the trade package would at least include a young roster player and likely a 2nd to third-round pick.

It remains to be seen if Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs would end up pulling the trigger on a deal like this or not but Trouba is the prototype for defensemen the Maple Leafs have gone for in recent years.
