Maple Leafs' top prospect Easton Cowan has been confirmed to have a serious injury he suffered last week, and Team Canada has announced he won't be with them.

Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan has indeed suffered an injury after a horrific collision last week. Last Friday, Easton Cowan suffered a huge hit during the game between the Oshawa Generals and London Knights.

Cowan was knocked out of the game after a crushing center-ice hit delivered by Generals defenseman Zackary Sandhu. Unfortunately, the aftermath of that hit has proven costly for Cowan.

On Monday morning, Hockey Canada announced that Cowan would no longer take part in their on-ice training camp for the upcoming World Junior Championship, citing "precautionary reasons."

It has since been confirmed that it was a result of the impact from Friday's collision. Initial reports feared Cowan had suffered a concussion on the play since it involved head-to-head contact between he and Sandhu.

Thankfully, a report from The Athletic's Joshua Kloke indicates Cowan is instead suffering from whiplash and not a concussion. Though serious in nature, that is good news considering whiplash will often heal faster than a standard concussion would.

The whiplash diagnosis is a surprise to those who witnessed the collision, which had more in common with a car wreck at center ice. Sandhu's clean hit saw him drive his shoulder into Cowan's body.

Unfortunately, their heads also happened to make contact on contact. Ironically, Sandhu appeared to take the brunt of the contact when Cowan's helmet came down hard into Sandhu's face, which put Sandhu on the ice bleeding from it.

Both players were subsequently disciplined, but Cowan's indefinite sidelining has become the concern now.

Cowan went into the locker room after the incident on Friday and was ruled out for the game. There is no clear timetable for his return at the moment.
