The New York Islanders made a shocking announcement today as they waived veteran forward Pierre Engvall for the purpose of sending him to the American Hockey League. NHL insider Chris Johnston reported the news first this afternoon, revealing the Islanders had placed Engvall on waivers for the first time in his career. This move is particularly shocking as the 28-year-old still has six more years left on his contract.

As some fans have pointed out, there is not a single team in the NHL that would even think about claiming him given the status of his contract. That being said, that is not the point of this move. More than likely, this move is intended to show veteran players on the team that no one is safe. They all have to earn their spots on the roster. Clearly, Engvall did not take his offseason seriously enough and now he is facing the consequences.

Many Islanders fans seem to be happy with the fact that veteran players are finally facing the same level of accountability that the team's young players have faced in recent years.

Others have taken this as an opportunity to chirp Lou Lamoriello for being a poor general manager. Considering the Islanders results on the ice in the past few seasons, they have good reason to be upset.

Engvall had 10 goals and 28 points last season for the Islanders in 74 games last season, the first of his seven-year deal. In total, he is up to 318 career regular-season appearances and has 57 goals and 120 points to show for it.
