It is hard to say exactly what is happening with Mitch Marner this summer, but Frank Serravalli has provided us with the latest rumor, as he believes the Leafs are going to try and force a trade this summer. The announcement appears to be the latest move in a game of cat and mouse between Marner and the Leafs. Ever since the Leafs were eliminated from the playoffs, rumors have circulated about Marner. At times it has seemed certain that he would be traded but more recently, the rumors have trended in the other direction. Apparently the Leafs have had enough of this as they appear to be putting their foot down according to Serravalli. Frank Seravalli doubles down on his Mitch Marner take: I think the Leafs are going to make a play and basically back him into a corner over the next three weeks, saying, 'Mitch, it's been great, but we're moving on. So whether it's now or eight months from now, your time's up.'

It seems as though Serravalli is confident that his information, presumably coming from someone with the Leafs, is correct. It directly contradicts what we have heard from Marner's camp recently, as their stance has been that Marner wants to start the season and see where things go. He has reportedly stated that he is fully committed to playing for the Leafs next season. Marner plans to honor the final year of his contract with the Leafs. Despite fan speculation, Mitch Marner's camp is not pursuing trade options or contract extensions. His agent, Darren Ferris, has confirmed there are no active discussions about a potential trade or extension this summer. Instead, Marner aims to start the upcoming season and evaluate the situation as it unfolds.

Given that Marner has a full no-trade clause, he ultimately holds all the cards in this situation. With the way things seem to be going, this could get ugly. If Marner refuses to waive his no-trade clause, he could theoretically complete the season with the Leafs and then sign elsewhere in free agency, effectively hurting the Leafs as the team would get nothing for him. One would have to imagine that the Leafs would get a fairly substantial return in a Marner trade, even with their compromised trading position, as such, this whole situation could set the Leafs back in a big way. Be sure to stay tuned over the summer and into next season to see how this saga concludes.
