TSN reporter Pierre Lebrun is on top of the Mitch Marner front today as he reported that the Maple Leafs have yet to specifically discuss trading him with other teams. The timing of LeBrun's report is quite notable. Earlier today, the Nashville Predators announced a trade, sending defenseman Ryan McDonagh back to the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Predators have been one of the teams linked to Marner in rumors this summer. Just FYI, it's my understanding as of this moment that the Maple Leafs have not spoken to a single team about Mitch Marner. The Leafs were focused on the coaching situation which they've handled now. But there hasn't been any trade conversations regarding Marner. Obviously we'll see how the next two months play out, no doubt teams will come calling the Leafs on him closer to the draft next month.

The Predators ultimately traded McDonagh back to his former club at his full cost. The team is not retaining any of his salary in the move. In return, they acquired a 2nd round pick as the primary asset coming back. However, that extra 6.75 million dollars in cap space is just as valuable to the team as the picks, if not more valuable. We have a trade to announce.

In his press conference that came after the trade was announced, Trotz was asked about the possibility of the team trading for Marner and he effectively gave a non-answer, calling the idea 'just rumors.' Report: Maple Leafs Haven't Discussed Trading Mitch Marner Amid Coaching Changes, Predators GM Barry Trotz Dismisses Rumors'⤵️ #LeafsForever

This doesn't mean the Predators aren't interested in Marner though. In fact, if the Leafs do decide to move Marner, it will likely be the biggest move of the offseason for any team. The Predators seem to be gearing up to make a big move of their own with the trade today. Could it be a match made in heaven? Be sure to stay tuned to find out.
